Celebrating our 50th Anniversary: Employee Spotlight - Glen Donaldson

Celebrating our 50th Anniversary: Glen Donaldson Interview

As we enter 2021 we are delighted to be celebrating Edinburgh Instruments 50th Anniversary. Join us in the celebration and get to know our hard working staff throughout the year. To start the celebration we caught up with Glen, a laser technician in production. Find out more about what interesting hobbies he enjoys taking part in outside of work and what he enjoys most about working for Edinburgh Instruments.

Tell us a little bit about your role and what a typical day might look like?

My role is to assemble and Test EPLEDs and EPLs. My usual day consists of assembling, testing and troubleshooting any EPL’S or EPLED’s and saving the results as a I go along.

During your time with the company what have you enjoyed the most?

Something I enjoyed and hoping will come back when the current situation is over would be the rolls on a Friday morning. It was something that I looked forward to week to week. Also, my co workers Chris and John. They have been really great co-workers. Both have been helpful and instructive and the banter between them helps make it a fun and enjoyable working atmosphere.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I have a few hobbies outside of work which are Snowboarding, Gaming/streaming and the one that people don’t expect Medieval Reenactment.

Tell us something most people don’t know about you?

I know a lot people know by now that I do Medieval Reenactment, but I don’t think people know I actually run and manage the charity itself.

What would we most likely find you doing on the weekend?

At the moment due to unfortunate circumstances the only hobby that is going anywhere right now is Gaming/streaming. You will find me streaming a game that I am playing on twitch every Sunday right now around 1pm to 4pm.

But ideally, I would be running and taking part in the activities of Medieval reenactment charity and Britannia XIV that I am currently the Manager off. Depending on the time of year I could be visiting groups up and down Scotland to ensure everything is running correctly and join in with their sessions, which includes combat, crafts and any social activities. If it is during summer, I would be managing the group at events/shows ensuring we put on a good display for the public that attend.

Do you have any goals you would like to achieve for 2021?

Currently I am saving up for a house so maybe with some luck I finally might be able to move out of my parents’ house. But that might be a goal only achievable by 2023.
