Maximising the rISC – Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence

Edinburgh Instruments recently sponsored and attended the ‘Maximising the rISC’ workshop on Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence (TADF) at the University of  Durham. The workshop was hosted by Prof. Andy Monkman, a leading expert on the photophysics of TADF OLED materials. The workshop played host to a range of world leading speakers including Prof. Chihaya Adachi, who was responsible for kick starting the TADF OLED revolution.

The name of the conference, Maximising the rISC, is a play on words of the operational principle of TADF OLEDs. rISC stand for Reverse Intersystem Crossing which is the conversion of triplet states to singlet in a thermally assisted process. This allows the triplet excitons formed in the OLED to be harvested in addition to the singlet, which dramatically increases the efficiency of the OLED. To create an efficient TADF OLED, the reverse intersystem crossing rate must be fast enough to outcompete non-radiative loss mechanisms and hence it is important to ‘Maximise the rISC’.

Research into new OLED emitters is a prominent application of our FLS1000 and FS5 spectrometers; where they are used to measure the emission spectra, photoluminescence quantum yield and excited state dynamins of potential new emitters. The workshop was attended by our Applications Scientist, Dr. Stuart Thomson, and provided a great chance to learn about recent advances in TADF OLEDs, chat about what our products can offer to the OLED community, and catch up with existing Edinburgh Instruments customers.
