Let’s get into it 

Meet Iona Hill, an Application Scientist here at Edinburgh Instruments. Application Scientists are like a bridge between the company and our clients. They conduct research, tests and samples using our products to share the best way to use them for real-world applications.  

What has been your journey to get you to where you are now?    

My fascination with the microscopic world began during an internship as part of my undergrad degree at the University of Strathclyde. I’ve always been drawn to art and photography, and microscopy instantly clicked with me. That initial spark led me to pursue a PhD, where I could spend my days immersed in the world of Raman microscopes. 

My PhD project, a joint venture between the University of Edinburgh and the University of Strathclyde, allowed me to delve into the radiation response of cancer cells using Raman microscopy. I was particularly drawn to the medical applications of this research. The idea that my work could contribute to such a meaningful goal was a powerful motivator.  

My interest for cancer research continued into my postdoctoral position in Houston, Texas. Beyond the incredible Tex-Mex cuisine and the excitement of the rodeo, this experience was invaluable for broadening my understanding of cancer biology and, crucially, expanded my expertise in fluorescence microscopy. 

After a few years in the Lone Star State, the pull of home grew strong. I decided to return to Scotland to be closer to family. In September 2024, I joined EI as an Application Scientist specialising in fluorescence spectroscopy and microscopy.  

What do you do in your spare time? / Where would we find you on the weekend? 

My spare time is a battle between my love of the outdoors and my aversion to the Scottish weather. I like spending time hiking and doing water sports like paddleboarding and kayaking. I have also recently taken up curling which is a lot of fun. I started curling to get out of the Texas heat but now it’s normally warmer on the rink than outside in Edinburgh! When I’m not freezing cold up a Munro or sliding around on the ice, you’ll find me trying out new recipes in the kitchen! 

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go? 

If I could go anywhere, I’d explore Patagonia’s hiking trails and then journey on to Antarctica. I’d love to see the immense icescapes and, of course, the penguins!
