Celebrating our 50th Anniversary: Glen Rutter Interview
As we continue to highlight our staff during our 50th Anniversary celebrations, this month we shine a light on Glen Rutter, our Marketing Executive. Glen has been with the company for 2 years now, we caught up with him to take a look at his role and the interesting hobbies he has outside of work.
Tell us a little bit about your role and what a typical day might look like?
My time is divided between all the Techcomp groups, which means there is always something different to be working on. One of the fun things about working in the marketing department is that two days never look the same, as there is always a new project waiting to be developed.
On your typical day, you could find me organising and scheduling webinars, planning our participation at international conferences, helping to develop the website, or working alongside the graphic design team to help create video and photography output.
During your time with the company what have you enjoyed the most?
Working at Edinburgh Instruments has been a huge learning curve for me as it was my first professional role after graduation. Over my two years here I have really appreciated the way the team has encouraged growth, expanded my knowledge and developed my skills. It has been a pleasure to work with such a friendly and positive team.
Of course, there are plenty of great professional moments over the past two years – however the 2019 Christmas party was a personal highlight.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
In my spare time you will most likely find me in the kitchen. I love to have my friends’ round for a dinner party and can spend a long-time planning on what we will have to eat and drink. It isn’t always (or often) a success, but I find it quite relaxing. I just try to channel my inner Nigella and hope for the best!
Another big hobby of mine is cycling. Depending on the weather, and my energy levels, I love to go out after work for a cycle out into the Pentlands. It’s a great form of exercise, and a brilliant way to see the country.
Tell us something most people don’t know about you?
I’m a pretty open book, and there isn’t much people might not know about me – I often have trouble keeping my mouth shut! However, it might not be common knowledge that I am a bit of a book worm. I enjoy reading and always like to have a book on the go. Over the past year I have really enjoyed Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stewart, and Boy Parts by Eliza Clarke. Please let me know if you have any recommendations.
What would we most likely find you doing on the weekend?
A good weekend starts with a long lie in followed by a big indulgent brunch. Whilst coffee and pancakes aren’t essential, they are heavily encouraged!
After this, you will find me catching up with friends around Edinburgh, perhaps visiting a gallery or a new restaurant. If not, I’ll most likely be visiting family back down in England. Of course, in the evening there is nothing better than going for a few drinks with friends or my partner in the city centre.
Do you have any goals you would like to achieve for 2021?
2021 has been a very difficult year for lots of people, and I would hate to add any more pressure on top of that. I can only hope the rest of the year brings more time with my friends and family! Also, a nice sunny holiday wouldn’t be too bad!
