After obtaining his PhD at Reading University Richard began his career in academia working with Des Smith in the Physics Department of Heriot Watt University where he rose to be a Senior Lecturer. He has been widely published in areas of semiconductor physics, lasers, spectroscopy and technology.
Richard has been involved in Edinburgh Instruments since the outset, becoming the first Sales and Marketing Manager before leaving his university post to become the Managing Director, a post he held for over 25 years. Richard’s involvement in the company now follows a more relaxed part-time role in R&D project management. As well as being a Board member of EI, Richard is a Director / Company Secretary of the United Kingdom Consortium for Photonics and Optics (UKCPO).
