Fluorescence Lifetime Plate Reader

The Fluorescence Lifetime Plate Reader will be the first commercially available single modality plate reader based on the technique of Time Correlated Single Photon Counting.

While TCSPC has been the established method of choice for high precision fluorescence lifetime measurements in photochemistry for many years, this technique is now increasingly used in the field of biological research. This is because of two reasons: Firstly, the requirement on quality and variety of data in biosciences is dramatically rising, and secondly the high standard in electronic integration and ultra-fast pulsed semiconductor light sources – fundamental requirements for system integration - have only recently become available.

Edinburgh Instruments have worked on this project in collaboration with dye manufacturing, labelling, drug developing, and assay developing companies and institutions. The system is currently undergoing stringent validation tests and will soon be commercially available.

Features include:

  • Time Correlated Single Photon Counting Acquisition times less than 1second/well

  • Temporal resolution down to picoseconds

  • 96, 384, 1536 well plates

  • Least Squares and Maximum Likelihood Analysis software

  • Four excitation wavelengths available: 370nm, 405nm, 440nm, 470nm

  • Spectral Range of Fluorescence Detection: 425nm - 670nm

  • Full computer control through Windows software

  • User friendly software for biological and routine use, with second level for specialised data analysis
     

Applications:

The Measurement of Fluorescence Lifetimes not only provides the additional parameter that is directly related to kinetics of the fluorophore's excited state, it also allows separation of spectrally indistinguishable components (e.g. free and bound fluorophores) and the temporal discrimination of scattered background and background emission (auto-fluorescence).
